During the second gathering of the U.S. Senate's forum on artificial intelligence, Evan Smith, CEO of Altana Technologies, expressed optimism about the responsible and constructive approach taken to balance AI innovation with safety and security. The forum brought together around 20 technology leaders, venture capitalists, academics, and privacy experts for a productive three-and-a-half-hour summit.

Smith highlighted two key concerns that were discussed during the event: the responsible application of innovative technologies such as genAI, ensuring its ethical use while avoiding harm to individuals, and its potential impact on the labor market. He praised the Senators for their knowledge and good intentions.

The threat posed by China was a recurring topic throughout the discussions, with participants raising questions about how the United States can maintain a competitive edge. The need for a dedicated federal agency to govern AI was also mentioned, although many tech experts present voiced their opposition to excessive regulation.

In addition to these overarching themes, senators engaged in a roundtable conversation with tech experts to explore the potential of AI in drug discovery for complex diseases. They also expressed deep concern over a recent poll suggesting that more than 80% of Americans believe AI development should be slowed down.

Throughout the discussion, there was a palpable attempt by federal lawmakers to avoid repeating the oversight they experienced with social media. Acknowledging that the impact of AI could be far-reaching, they sought to proactively anticipate and address potential problems. Smith noted that the negative consequences stemming from the unregulated growth of social media had left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Smith confidently predicted that another meeting, marking the third in a series of forums, would take place in the future. He concluded by saying, "We're off to a good start."
