U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reiterated American support for Israel in its ongoing conflict with Hamas during his second visit to the country in less than a week.

Consultations and Briefings in Jerusalem

During his visit to Jerusalem on Monday, Blinken held consultations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials. He also briefed them on his discussions with Arab leaders regarding the conduct of the war and the importance of safeguarding civilian lives.

Sheltering Amid Rocket Attack

In an alarming turn of events, the meeting was temporarily interrupted as both delegations, including Netanyahu and Blinken, sought shelter due to a rocket attack.

Firm Support for Israel's Right to Self-defense

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that Blinken "underlined his firm support for Israel's right to defend itself from Hamas terrorism." Furthermore, Blinken reaffirmed the United States' determination to provide the Israeli government with the necessary resources to protect its citizens.

Focus on Humanitarian Assistance and Hostage Rescue Efforts

In addition to discussing military support, Blinken also addressed U.S. efforts to provide humanitarian aid to civilians affected by the conflict. He emphasized the United States' commitment to assisting in the rescue of nearly 200 hostages held by Hamas.

Prior Arab States Tour and Extended Diplomatic Mission

Before arriving in Israel, Blinken embarked on a six-nation tour of Arab states. During this tour, he engaged with Arab leaders who expressed concerns about the potential humanitarian crisis for Palestinians and the risk of a broader regional conflict arising from an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza.

Blinken's diplomatic mission has been extended twice, and he plans to return to Jordan following his visit to Israel.
