Capture and Recovery of the Weapon

Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden, in an interview with broadcaster VRT, stated, "We have the good news that we found the individual." It was also confirmed that the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting has been recovered.

While the federal prosecutor's office remained cautious, mentioning that there are "strong presumptions but no certainties," it is evident that the suspect was shot by the police in the Schaerbeek neighborhood, where the rampage had taken place.

Horrifying Video Footage Highlights the Attack

Social media platforms were flooded with amateur videos capturing the horrifying attack. The footage shows a man wearing an orange fluorescent vest riding a scooter, pulling out a large weapon, and indiscriminately opening fire on innocent passersby. He even pursued his targets into a building before gunning them down.

Prime Minister Expresses Condolences

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed his deep condolences for the victims and their families in a press conference held just before dawn. He said, "Last night, three people left for what was supposed to be a wonderful soccer party. Two of them lost their lives in a brutal terrorist attack. Their lives were cut short in full flight, cut down by extreme brutality."

De Croo also extended his sympathies to the Swedish prime minister. As a result of this shocking incident, security has been heightened in the capital, with special attention given to locations associated with the Swedish community in the city.

Distinct Cowardice: Attack in Belgium

Prosecutor Eric Van Duyse shared that immediate security measures were implemented to protect the Swedish supporters present at the stadium. It took over two hours before an announcement appeared on the big stadium screen, providing some relief: "Fans, you can leave the stadium calmly." Consequently, one by one, each stand emptied onto the streets, which were heavily patrolled by the police in their search for the attacker.

Caroline Lochs, a devoted fan from Antwerp, described the atmosphere as a mix of frustration, confusion, and fear. She stated, "I think everyone was quite scared."

De Croo revealed important details about the assailant. The suspect is a Tunisian man residing illegally in Belgium and he utilized a military-grade weapon to carry out the attack. Tragically, two Swedes lost their lives, while another victim is currently undergoing treatment for severe injuries.

Federal Prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw shed light on disturbing information. The suspect uploaded a video online where he purportedly claimed responsibility for killing three Swedish individuals. In a chilling statement, he emphasized that, for him, the Quran represents a red line that he is prepared to sacrifice himself for.

This harrowing incident serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and security measures to protect innocent lives.
