SEOUL, South Korea — In another show of defiance, North Korea has launched several cruise missiles into waters off its western coast. This latest act comes amidst deepening nuclear tensions with the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

The U.S. and South Korean militaries are currently analyzing the launches, with the exact number of missiles and their flight details yet to be confirmed. This marks the second known missile launch event of the year for North Korea, following a test-firing of its first solid-fuel intermediate range ballistic missile on January 14th. The country continues its efforts to enhance its weapons arsenal targeting U.S. military bases in Japan and Guam.

The escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula can be attributed to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's ongoing weapons development and provocative threats of nuclear conflict against the United States and its Asian allies. In response, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have been increasing their combined military exercises, which are portrayed by Kim as invasion rehearsals, as well as strengthening their deterrence strategies involving nuclear-capable U.S. assets.

Last week, North Korea claimed to have conducted a test of a purported nuclear-capable underwater attack drone as a response to a joint naval exercise conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan. It continues to blame its rivals for the tensions in the region.
