Singapore's Shell Jurong Island (SJI) successfully extinguished a fire that broke out at one of its petrochemical unit manufacturing sites on Jurong Island. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 hours Singapore time on October 10.

No Casualties Reported

Market sources confirm that there were no reported casualties resulting from the fire. However, the potential impact on Shell's styrene monomer (SM) production remains uncertain. Shell is currently assessing the extent of the damages caused by the fire.

"We will have to wait and see how serious the damages are," stated a China-based SM broker.

SJI Production Capacity

SJI's website reveals that its site has the capability to produce a total of 1,040 million metric tons per year of SM and 490,000 metric tons per year of propylene oxide (PO) between its two POSM lines.

Minimal Disruption to Operations

Fortunately, the fire appears to have had minimal impact on Shell's cracker located on the same site. The other chemical production at the facility is expected to continue without disruption.

"Besides PO and SM, there should be no disruption to the other chemical production," assured the SM broker.
